Sharayu Precision: Setting an example
A
company that provides more than equal work opportunities to mentally challenged
people.
As many as 17 out of a total of 32 employees at Sharayu Precision. Pune, are very special people. Special, not because they are mentally challenged but because of their unflagging determination to fight the odds and stand on their own feet.
Guiding them all the way is the Managing Partner of the company, Subhash Chuttar. For Subhash, the journey began at home. He recalls that his son, Ajay, was mentally challenged but always a very bright child with a sharp memory, and a lot of potential.
Then, seventeen years ago, Subhash came across mentally challenged Suryakant Yadav, and got him into his factory. Subhash trained him to work on assembling jobs and today, Yadav independently supports a family of four, and Ajay, his son, is proficient in helping his father with work related to the excise department!
After Yadav, Subhash went on to build Sharayu's workforce of mentally challenged persons, who are now engaged in jobs like assembling, drilling, rivetting, greasing, polishing, packing and readying material for dispatch. "They have the potential to be productive; it is up to us to recognize this and provide them an opportunity", he says.
The company's contribution does not end at just providing employment. The camaraderie and affection levels at the unit are also very high. Everyone's birthday is celebrated, the annual picnic is remembered for months, and in times of illness, the workers are given medical attention and are well looked after. "All the mentally challenged employees of Sharayu are permanent employees, and will always be with me", says Subhash. In fact, even in times when orders are low, the organisation manages to find them some job or the other to keep them productivelyengaged.
Because of this excellent experience with a mentally challenged workforce, Sharayu now plans to set up a Training Centre for 40 such people to prepare them for employment with other companies. Subhash also actively persuades other companies to employ such persons.
What Subhash strongly felt about and translated into concrete action, was to enable mentally challenged persons to make a contribution. The only thing needed was an understanding on the part of society. In turn, he has made society proud of Sharayu!
