Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd: A role of model

A disabled worker at his desk. One of India's largest public sector companies takes its role as a concerned corporate citizen very seriously.

What most people in India do know is that Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (H.P.C.L.) is one of India's largest public sector companies in the area of refining and marketing of petroleum products. Many people also know that it is one of India's most profitable and well managed companies.

What most people do not realise is just how seriously H.P.C.L. takes its role of social responsibility and welfare activities for people with disabilities.

Consider this: H.P.C.L. is one of the rare organisations which has identified and reserved various posts for persons with disabilities. Today, out of a total workforce of 11,230 people, 135 or a full 1.2% are persons with visual, orthopaedic and hearing impairments!

H.P.C.L. has also instituted and awarded perpetual scholarships - Rupees 10,000 per student - for visually impaired students, in association with the National Association for the Blind (N.A.B.) In course of this association, H.P.C.L. has sponsored more than 120 visually impaired students, and has also provided Braille kits and text books, as well as equipment for production of talking books to N.A.B., Mumbai.

More examples of H.P.C.L. being a company with a social conscience: it has awarded 225 scholarships to persons with disability, ranging from primary to post-graduation education. It has, on an ongoing basis, generously provided for computers, equipment for physiotherapy and therapeutic care, ambulance vans, school uniforms and bags, photocopier machines, tool kits and sewing machines for vocational training, etc. to a number of N.G.O.s, rehabilitation centres and schools allover India!

H.P.C.L. has also been responsible for corrective surgeries for visually and orthopaedically impaired persons, including more than 100 polio surgeries. It has also constructed multi-utility buildings, hostels, kitchens and dining halls at Coimbatore, Nagpur and Aurangabad.

Truly, H.P.C.L. is the ideal role model of an organisation which takes its dual responsibilities-corporate and social- seriously. And does well at both!
