Vivek Kumar Agrawal: Dedication action
The State Commissioner for Disability, Government of Chattisgarh, he believes in working towards total rehabilitation.
At
the age of six years, Vivek Kumar Agrawal slowly started losing vision, but
the steadily progressing disability did not deter him from pursuing his studies.
He obtained a Bachelor's degree in Commerce as well as a degree in law.
At the age of 25, he lost his eyesight. It was his own determination and the support of his wife Jyoti that steered him to organising people with disabilities, and fighting for their rights.
As the Founder President of the Disabled Welfare Society, he was instrumental in putting pressure on the government to implement the 3% reservation in jobs for disabled people. As a result, many disabled people got suitable employment in Chattisgarh.
In recognition of his good work, the government of Chattisgarh appointed him as the State Commissioner for Disabled People.
On Vivek's recommendation, the government of Chattisgarh has increased the 3% quota for people with disabilities in jobs (as mandated under The Disability Act 1995) to 6%! More than 550 disabled persons have already been gainfully employed. Another unique initiative of Vivek was to motivate the management of the Bhilai Steel Plant to allot plots to 200 disabled people. He has now been asked by the Governor of the state to start an industry-comprising solely of workers with disability -which would be a model not only for Chattisgarh, but for the entire country.
Vivek is also an accomplished artist and singer, and performs with an orchestra composed of visually impaired persons.
