Sushila Bohra: A quarter century of success
She
started the first school for people with visual impairment in Rajasthan.
From the very beginning of her career, Sushila Bohra has been working with women, particularly rural women. It was during the course of her social work that she decided to focus on the ducational aspect of women and children. It was way back in 1977 that she opened Netraheen Vikas Sansthan. As its Founder President, she has been carrying on with the work relentlessly for over a quarter of a century.
Netraheen Vikas Sansthan was the very first school for the visually impaired in Rajasthan. It provides not only training and education, but also rehabilitation and employment to people with visual impairment.
A landmark of sorts was set when the Sansthan, under Sushila's supervision, provided Kisan Vikas Patras, each worth Rupees 5,000 to all its students, for the purpose of self-employment. In 1989, through 'Sambal', a women's unit of Lord Mahavira Disability Help Unit, she helped more than 4,500 women, of which over 10% were women with disabilities, to get gainful employment.
Her plans for the future are no less path-breaking: she envisages the setting up of Rajasthan's first I.T.I. Centre for persons with disabilities to enable them to get technical jobs, and the setting up of the first computer laboratory for the visually impaired in Rajasthan.
Sushila is the recipient of the National Award in 1992; Rajasthan's State Award for 1995-96; and the Sadguru Gyananand National Award and the Mahila Shakti Awards, both in 2001.
