Subhash V. Dhavale: Making a difference
Overcoming
his own disability, he went on to make a difference
in the lives of others.
Subhash Dhavale was affected with infantile paralysis at the age of 4, which rendered him completely paralysed from the neck downward. Over a period of the next 16 years, he underwent several surgeries that finally enabled him to walk with the help of a stick.
In 1970, he qualified as a Chartered Accountant, and then went on to obtain degrees in Lawand Management. Currently, the Chief Operating Officer of I.C.I.C.I. Securities and Finance Company, he has also devoted considerable time to the Indian disability movement. Among his many other initiatives, he tested the first motorised tri-wheeler, specially developed for people with orthopaedic disabilities.
Subhash has conducted special sessions with the Mumbai and Thane police to inculcate awareness about the special :1eeds of disabled people among them. He has done considerable welfare work through the Lions Club. He has also coordinated with the Ministries of Finance, Commerce and Industry for the manufacture of a specially made hand-operated car for people with disabilities.
Subhash is a keen sportsman, having represented his school in junior level swimming and cricket competitions; and has indulged in his love for traveling by driving his own vehicle to most parts of India.
