Atul Desai: Spearheading change

He lost the use of both his legs due to polio at the tender age of two. It was his and his parents' ‘never say die’ attitude that made Atul Desai complete his schooling and decide to become an architect.

The principal of the J.J. School of Arts was ready to give him admission but was skeptical about his ability to cope with the strenuous course of study. It was again Atul’s attitude, tenacity and determination that finally convinced him, and after his completion of the course, Atul become a qualified architect.

While establishing his own successful practice, Atul also spearhead social improvements persons with disabilities. Atul associated himself with the Fellowship of the physically Handicapped (F.P.H.), which has done pioneering work in the area of disability rights. Later, becoming its President in 1989, Atul continuously strived for better aids and appliances , facilities and environment for people with disabilities. Under his leadership, F.P.H. developed and produced and electronically operated wheelchair and started a new department for limbs and appliances.

Atul has been the main speaker at seminars for making Bhopal and Pune barrier-free cities, and has actively contributed in the movement for creating barrier free environment for individuals with disabilities.

Today, Atul heads three highly successful architectural firms, employing over 35 professionals, is the recipient of the National Award in 1989, and is listed in the book on ‘Outstanding Disabled Personalities’.
