Schizophrenia Research Foundation: All in the mind

A cultural programme involving persons with mental imapirments.Seventeen years ago, Chennai-based Schizophrenia Research Foundation decided to take up a challenge that very few institutions would – the care and rehabilitation of the mentally disabled – and changed a mindset.

Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF) is a care and rehabilitation institute for people with mental illness that promotes awareness, research and training. It does this with the help of its dedicated workforce that includes 106 mentally challenged indviduals.

The secret is to understand mental illness and find out the extent to which it actually affects the individual's capacity to work and contribute to society. As a research foundation, SCARF has done exactly this. Consequently, it has utilised its resources and provided sevices that include out-patient and in patient care; rehabilitation and regaining lost skills and an employment bureau that maintains a list of those fit to seek work. It has already placed 126 mentally disabled men and 35 women in jobs. No wonder, then, that in 1995 it recieved the 'Best Employer of Disabled People' award from the Government of India.

SCARF's contribution in demystifying mental health for the public became all the more pertinent after the Ewardi tragedy. To spread awareness still further, it has made films and documentaries and also published several articles.

There are no two ways about it: SCARF is the silver lining in the lives of many.
