Professor Singanapalli Balaram: Abling design

Fifty-eight-year-old Professor Singanapalli Balaram, Chairman, Knowledge Management Centre, National Institute of Design (N.I.D.), Ahmedabad, works hard at sensitising designers, planners and architects to the needs of disabled persons.

Accessibility and disability are the two issues that have concerned Balaram for the past 25 years. Qualified in Engineering, Industrial Designing and Design Research, he has been instrumental in bringing the requirements of disabled person into designing education and design practice.

He is, no doubt, the right man at the right job. Balaram has influenced policy changes in this direction at N.I.D., and even made sure that the N.I.D. campus is made accessible to disabled persons. He has also drafted the Post Diploma programme in Design for special needs, which will soon commence under his charge. He has written on this subject for both, the Encyclopaedia Britannica and the Universal Designing Handbook. Balaram has also designed calipers for the orthopaedically impaired.

Closer home, he has collaborated with N.C.P.E.D.P. in organising the first national seminar on Design for the Disabled. Indeed, Balaram’s efforts towards creating a barrier-fee world for disabled persons have led to increased awareness at all levels.
