Infar (India) Limited: Corporate care
Infar was set up in India in 1967. A pharmaceutical company,
it manufactures and markets medicines and services for human health care. In
1981, the International year of the Disabled, this corporate citizen took in
its first batch of six speech and hearing impaired girls for the highly important
function of inspecting individual ampoules in the packaging
section of its injection department. Infar invested not only money, but time
and attention too. It appointed special trainers and supervisors to help them
meet the levels of competence required by the company. These supervisors also
built the confident levels of the disabled employees. Other batches followed
and, presently, there are 18 speech and hearing impaired girls employed in the
company, besides other disabled staff.
Infar has displayed, over time, social commitment through a Trust it has created for this purpose. Of special importance are Infar's projects in immunisation, hunger, its eye camps, its regular blood donation camps and AIDS awareness programmes.
Infar does not look at the handicaps of disabled people, but looks out for their talents and skills. A person with severe cerebral palsy, using a head pointer, has created and now manages their web site. And the chief of a regional service unit, an orthopaedically impaired person, is considered one of the company's best in that work area. Above all, Infar has made every other employee a participant in positive action for disabled persons.
In the area of employment opportunities, Infar's employment of persons with disabilities is part of a sustained commitment to the cause of equal rights and opportunities for them. Their gainful employment leads to such employees being healthy and happy; they work with a feeling of safety and security, while being completely integrated into the larger society.
In doing all this, Infar has shown, in more ways than one, that it is indeed a company with a healing touch.
