Dr. Uma Tuli: Leading light
'The lady with the sword' (Uma has been a Home Guards Commander), who has earned a PhD in 'The Symbolist Technique of Ernest Hemingway', has helped draft and lobby for The Disability Act, 1995. She is also the youngest lecturer ever to be appointed by the Union Public Service Commission in India.
It is Uma's vision that brings to life her concerns. She is a strong believer in "the potential of persons with disabilities, their rights and participation in every walk of life". For Uma, "strength does not come from physical capacity but from indomitable will", and it is this that she has translated into action by setting up the Amar Jyoti Rehabilitation and Research Centre in Delhi, and the Amar Jyoti School and Rehabilitation Centre in Gwalior. These institutions, like Uma herself, are frontrunners in the disability sector.
"The Chariot of Rehabilitation," she elaborates, "moves on four wheels - Education, Medical Care, Vocational Training and Group Organisations. It is, therefore, important to look at the concept of rehabilitation with a holistic approach."
Uma is an innovator who has gone beyond the rudiments of the basic welfare of disabled persons into creating links that Integrate them into society through employment in industry and institutions. Bringing the disabled and the non-disabled children together in a school of over 500 ensures that these children are, from an early age, led into a world that promises them 'Opportunities Without prejudice.'
