Rashmi Paliwal: Threads of commitment
Clothes maketh the man/woman. But what about the people who are making the clothes? Do we really care about them? Well, yes – if you are Rashmi Paliwal. For this woman entrepreneur, who has set many trends in the garment industry, is sensitive to the needs of her workers. And she is even more sensitive to the fact that disabled people, too, need employment.
Her workplace is an integrated one. At the Balloons' factory, you will find hearing impaired people busy at fabric layering, or line checking, or looking after quality control. A mentally impaired person can be seen somewhere else, quite involved in the initial checking; others may be packing finished garments. Feeling his way through, and trusting his fingers to do the finding, is a visually impaired person in the quality check unit.
Rashmi has made a conscious decision to give jobs to disabled persons In a sense, she has customised jobs available for them. Vocational training units have been set up by Balloons to train the hearing impaired in tailoring. Students from The Spastics Society of Northern India (now known as AADI) have been given jobs in the packaging unit. Rashmi now plans to build a new block, which will be wheelchair-friendly. She strongly believes that a disabled person is capable of working like any other person. To further uphold this conviction, she intends to employ more people with disabilities. Together, they can, and will, ensure that Balloons reaches greater heights.
