He's been to prison for eight days. He's led hunger strikes and participated in satyagrahas. He is Georgekutty Kareparampil, the General Secretary and Executive Director of Kerala Federation of the Blind (K.F.B.)

Georgekutty has played a vital and significant role in conceptualising, planning and then managing the execution of the programmes of K.F.B. He has directed his energies at vocational training, with special emphasis on self-employment of visually disabled people.

As a young man of 22, when he had to leave his job because he had become almost completely blind, he diverted his energy to writing short stories and articles, in Malayalam, for newspapers and magazines. Today, there isn't a committee on issues concerning visual impairment that he isn't invited to.

Georgekutty directs the rehabilitation and training programme of K.F.B. centres across Kerala from four towns in the state. The K.F.B. Employment and Placement Service has found jobs for over 300 people and set up in self-employment over 1,500 visually disabled persons. His work has been widely recognised, in not only Kerala, but other states as well.

Besides working at the grassroots level outside of the metros, Georgekutty has found the time to publish books on many Aspects of disability and is in the forefront as a strong advocate of the rights of disabled people.

It is persons such as a Georgekutty who enrich and sustain the movement to create a just and honourable space for disabled persons in our society.
