Dr. A.K. Banerjee Choudhury: Looking ahead

As Chairman of the Recruitment Board at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited, Asesh makes sure that disabled people are given jobs. As Founder-President of Ahead, he helps in the running of a special school and a pre- vocational training centre for disabled persons. As Founder of the Open Heart Club, he has worked on a curriculum that integrates sports and cultural activities for those with disabilities.

And there is more. Asesh is involved with Pen Tree Club, a programme for nature conservation; every year, he organises international film festivals on disability; he has worked for the welfare of the backward tribes of Bihar; he has also written books comprising nursery rhymes which are available in tribal languages, and include music cassettes that are used in schools for disabled children.

Asesh is a disability activist who has fought for the right to be seen in a wheelchair! Denied access into a cinema hall at an early age, Asesh made sure that the wheelchair became acceptable in public places. He also started wheelchair sports in Calcutta.

The balance sheet of Asesh's life is indeed impressive: He was good at his studies (and there is a PhD in Operations Research to prove that); he is good at his work. He is totally committed to the cause of disability, and has received many awards of appreciation. Add it all, and you get a scorecard that inspires.
