Titan Industries Ltd: Need of the hour

Titan Industries Limited (T.I.L.), a joint venture of the house of Tata and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation, commenced operation in 1987. Today it is one of the world's largest manufacturer of quartz analogue watches. Titan has also emerged as a major player in the quartz analogue ornamental clocks and branded jewellery markets.

In achieving all this, Titan assumed an early leadership role in promoting employment for people with disabilities. In 1990, within three years of its inception, Titan won recognition from the president of India as an example of an Outstanding Employer of disabled People. In 1993, this recognition was again conferred on Titan. In 1993, and again in 1996, it was recognised by the Government of Tamil Nadu for being the largest employer of disabled persons. In 1998, Titan was conferred the Mother Teresa Award by Chennai's Loyola Institute of Business Administration, having been adjudged the Best Corporate Citizen.

Titan believes it is not philanthropy that has provided the motivation to employ people with disabilities. It is Titan's conviction that the employment of disabled people need not compromise productivity and the bottom line. The lasting benefit is, that the workforce, as a whole, becomes more aware, more caring and more concerned about one another.
And this, in fact, enhances the level of employee commitment and morale.

So, when 'The Titan' set about the achievement of its business objectives, it did not forget to nurture people -- its most precious resource. High standards at work meant ensuring that all those working in the company achieved high standards as individuals as well. Titan nurtured togetherness; housed the disabled with the non-disabled, and, most importantly, when a problem surfaced, it lent them an ear. Such measures to address the sensitivities of the disabled, led to their gaining higher levels of confidence, Today, at its factory in Hosur, Titan has 169 disabled employees out of a blue-collar workforce of 3,235, which amounts to 5.22 per cent.

Titan truly signifies a company with a heart as well as a head. Is it just “being catalysts in the process of change” that Titan can number among its achievements? Or has it got something to do with tendering to the smallest details in life -- a bit like looking after the microscopic parts of a watch.
