Code on barrier-free accessibility in buildings

The publication of a building code to ensure a barrier-free accessibility was first published in Singapore in 1990, for the purpose of implementing the Building Control Regulations, 1989. This signalled the dawn of a new architectural era in the country, in which all new buildings would not only be disabled-friendly but also cater to the needs of the greying population.

Several years have passed since that first publication. These years have resulted in experience in implementing the Code and, combining this with the feedback gleaned from various professional bodies and organisations working with people with disabilities, Singapore’s Building Control Division initiated a comprehensive review of the Code. The aim was to update and fine-tune the provisions of the Code to better suit current conditions.

This exercise resulted in this revised ‘Code on barrier-free accessibility in buildings’, which will more satisfactorily serve the needs of the disabled population and of the elderly.
