Conducting
an accessibility audit is easy, and often, quite revealing. The following audit
questionnaires, used by our audit teams, will help you conduct an audit of a
building or public place in your area. We encourage you to conduct such audits
and send us your results that would be included in our database of audits. Remember
to take photographs of the places you audit for documentary evidence.
The audits are divided into two categories – audit of
common areas (toilets, parking spaces, etc) and audit of specific locations
(Banks, hospitals, etc).
1. Audit of common areas
Please mark “yes”, “no” or “not
applicable” and record observations in a remarks column.
A) Entrances/exit points
- Is the main entrance to the building accessible?
- If there are steps in front of the main building, do
these steps have a hand railing?
- Is there a ramp in front of the main building?
- Does this ramp have railings?
Is the accessible entrance clearly identifiable?
- Is the entrance wide enough?
- Is the door a push-open door?
- In multi-storey buildings, does the accessible entrance
permit access to a conveniently located elevator?
- Is the entrance landing area sufficient?
- Is the entrance landing easily identifiable?
- Is the entrance landing area non-slippery?
- Are there tactile indications for exit doors?
- Is the entrance landing area free of obstacles?
- Are emergency exits easily identifiable?
- Are emergency exits easily accessible?
B) Parking areas
- Is there a parking space available near the building?
- Are there accessible parking facilities?
- Are indoor parking spaces located closest to accessible
elevators?
- Are accessible parking spaces within 50 metres of building
entrances?
- Are accessible parking spaces marked by the international
symbol of accessibility?
- Are there enforcement procedures to ensure that accessible
parking spaces are not used by non-disabled people?
- If there is a drop-off area, is it marked by signage?
- Is there an accessible path from the drop-off area to
the main entrance?
- Is the parking space provided with visual floor
indicators?
C)
Ramps
- Is there a complementary ramped route next to the stairs?
- Is the ramp gradient less than 1:20?
- Is there an appropriate landing area at every change
in ramp direction and at the top and bottom of every ramp?
- Are the ramps protected on both sides?
- Is the width of the ramp appropriate?
- Is the surface of the ramp non-slippery?
- Is the ramp surface clear of obstructions?
- Is the location of the ramp clearly identifiable?
D) Elevators
- Is there an accessible path leading to the elevator?
- Is the door of the elevator wide enough?
- Is the space inside the elevator enough?
- Is the elevator cab provided with handrails on three
sides?
- Are the handrails provided at the right height?
- Is the control panel mounted at the right height?
- Are the control buttons large and provided with embossed
numerals?
- Is the height of the lobby call button accessible to
wheelchair users?
- Is the elevator provided with audible signals indicating
arrival at a floor?
- Is the elevator provided with visual signals indicating
arrival at a floor?
- Is the elevator door easy to identify?
- Is the emergency intercom usable without voice communication?
- Are there tactile or Braille instructions for the communication
system?
- Is the door opening/closing interval on enough?
- Is the floor of the elevator non-slippery?
- Are the doors and handrails of the elevator of contrasting
colour?
E) Stairs
- Is the minimum width of the stairs enough?
- Is the landing space at the top and bottom of the
stairs enough?
- Are the stair nosings slip-resistant?
- Is the location of the stairs clearly identifiable?
- Is the surface of the stairs slip-resistant?
- Is a handrail installed?
- Do the stairs have guide strips?
F) Corridors
- Is the minimum unobstructed width of the corridor wide
enough for wheelchair users?
- Does the corridor width allow manoeuvring through doors
located along its length?
- Does the corridor have guide strips?
- Is the corridor pathway obstruction-free?
G)
Wash rooms/ toilets/ bathrooms
- Are there separate toilets available for disabled persons?
- Is the accessible toilet identified by a sign?
- Is the entrance to the public toilet accessible to people
with disabilities?
- Is the width of the door wide enough?
- Is the wash basin accessible?
- Is there enough manoeuvring space in the toilet?
- Is there at least one accessible shower?
- Are grab bars installed in bath tubs and showers at an
appropriate height?
- Are accessible showers equipped with shower seats?
- Are the grab bars slip-resistant?
- Can grab bars withstand load?
- Is the mirror at an appropriate height?
- Is the rest room equipped with an alarm system accessible
to people with different disabilities?
- Are flushing arrangements, toilet paper and other dispensers
mounted at an appropriate height?
- Are flushing mechanisms easy to operate?
- Are the doors lockable from inside and releasable from
outside in emergency situations?
- Do pivoted doors open outwards?
- Does the door have an accessible locking system?
- Does the door have guide strips?
- Is the floor of the bathtub slip-resistant?
- Is the floor of the washroom slip-resistant?
H) Public telephones
- Is there at least one telephone accessible to a wheelchair
user?
- Is there at least one telephone equipped with hearing
aids?
- Are the numerals on the telephone raised to allow identification
by touch?
- Is the coin slot mounted at an appropriate height?
- Are accessible facilities identifiable?
I)
Counters
- Is the counter easily identifiable?
- Is the level of the counter accessible?
- Is the staff able to communicate with people with visual,
hearing and speech impairment?
- Is the staff supportive to mentally challenged clients?
J) Drinking facilities
- Is the water tap accessible?
- Can it be easily manoeuvred by a person with poor hand
function?
- Is the area dry?
- Are glasses provided?
K) Eating outlets
- Is the eating outlet generally accessible to disabled
people?
- Is there circulation passageway to allow a wheelchair
user to move around the eating outlet?
- Is there enough leg clearance space below the table?
- Is the height of the table appropriate?
- Is the height of the cash counter appropriate?
- Is there a menu card available in Braille?
- Is there a facility for a person with speech impairment
to be able to place an order?
- Do the tables have straight legs?

A) Hospital examination room
- Is the examination room easily identifiable?
- Is the examination room accessible?
- Is the examination table accessible?
- Is the weighing machine accessible?
B) Hospital sample collection room

- Is the sample collection room easily accessible?
- Is the sample collection table easily accessible?
C) Hospital ward
- Is the hospital ward accessible?
- Is the hospital ward easily identifiable?
- Is there enough room for wheelchair manoeuvring?
- Are switches at an accessible height?
- Are there tactile guiding lines for orientation?
- Is the area obstacle-free?
- Are the protrusions clearly marked?
D) Banks
- Are the various counters easily identifiable?
- Are the various counters easily accessible?
- Is the staff equipped to communicate with a person with
impaired hearing?
- Is the office of the Manager accessible?
- Does the room have space for comfortable manoeuvring
of wheelchair users?
- Are all obstacles clearly indicated?
- Are there guiding strips for visually impaired people?
- Are all the forms placed on accessible counters?
- Is there an identified place where people with disabilities
can fill the forms?
- Is the ATM identifiable?
- Is the ATM accessible?
- Is there space for wheelchair manoeuvring?
- Are there grab handles in the ATM enclosure?
- Can persons with different disabilities transact business
at the ATM?
- Is the surface slip-resistant?
E) Hotel rooms
- Is a room identified for people with disabilities
available on the ground floor?
- Is it accessible?
- Does the room have enough space for independent
manoeuvring?
- Are the latches at accessible heights?
- Are the electrical fixtures at accessible heights?
- Does the room have guiding lines?
- Does the study table have enough space for wheelchair
users?
- Is the room obstacle-free?
- Are the protrusions clearly marked?
- Is the cupboard accessible?
- Do the windows allow unobstructed viewing for wheelchair
users?
- Are window controls at accessible heights?
- Are curtain controls at accessible heights?
- Are all the room facilities like telephones, wake-up
calls and fire alarms accessible and easy to use by people with different
disabilities?
F) Cinema halls
- Does the hall have accessible seating at all levels
for wheelchair users?
- Is the ticket counter accessible?
- Are seats reserved for people with disabilities?
G) Government buildings
- Is the public area accessible to people with different
disabilities?
- Are the persons at the counters equipped to guide
people with different disabilities?
- Is the letter box accessible to people with different
disabilities?
H) Historical sites
- Are the information plates available in Braille?
- Is there a trained guide available specially for
people with disabilities?
- Are the shops at the site accessible to people
with different disabilities?
