Question: I use a wheelchair, and I find it difficult to use the pavements. Are there any specifications for accessible pavements?

Answer: Yes, there are specifications. The pavement should be dropped to be flush with the road, and should be at a gradient no greater than 1:12 on both sides of a convenient crossing. In addition:

• Width should not be less than 1200 mm.
• Pavement ramps should never lead to a zebra crossing.
• Warning blocks should be provided on the kerb side edge side of the slope so that a person with visual impairment does not accidentally walk onto the road.

Question: What should be the specifications of a ramp?

Answer:

• It should have a gentle slope (that is, a ratio of 1:12).
• There should be landings (every 750 mm of vertical rise).
• Width should be 1200 mm or more.
• Handrails should be provided on both sides at a height of 850 mm-950 mm. Both ends should be rounded and grouted, and should extend 300 mm beyond the top and bottom of the ramp.
• Surfaces (ramp and landing) should be firm and slip-resistant.
• The ramp should be accompanied by a flight of easy-going steps.
